1. Context
This task involved designing the pop-up windows shown on the pricing page when users with existing memberships click “Buy Now.”
Depending on their membership status, they may encounter one of three scenarios:
- Upgrade → Buying a higher-tier membership
- Downgrade → Buying a lower-tier membership
- Renewal not allowed → Current membership is valid for more than one year
The PM provided an initial prototype. My role was to restructure the information, simplify the copy, and make key actions and warnings more visually clear.
2. Problems with the Prototype
The prototype relied heavily on long text blocks, with little visual hierarchy or differentiation between scenarios.
Key issues:
- Text is too long, key information is buried.
- Generic titles (e.g., “Purchase Reminder”) didn’t reflect each scenario clearly
- Important warnings appear together with purchase info → easily overlooked.
- Users had to calculate dates and interpret rules themselves
- Visual design didn’t highlight negative consequences. The impact of the downgrade was not clearly communicated.
Other Issues:
- Timing gap between reminders and actual actions → may require double reminders (non-design issue).
